Project Estimator

Pay Scale: Exempt. Starting range $70,000
Role summary
A Project Estimator, is responsible for deciding the projected time frame needed to complete a project and additional factors like labour needs, materials, budgets and potential setbacks. Their duties include communicating with personnel and contractual professionals or vendors, using computer software to weigh production risks or compile reports and making presentations to project leaders outlining their suggestions for upcoming projects.
Essential responsibilities
- Prepares work to be estimated by gathering proposals, blueprints, specifications, and related documents.
- Identifies labour, material, and time requirements by studying proposals, blueprints, specifications, and related documents.
- Computes costs by analysing labour, material, and time requirements.
- Resolves discrepancies by collecting and analysing information.
- Presents prepared estimate by assembling and displaying numerical and descriptive information.
- Prepares special reports by collecting, analysing, and summarizing information and trends.
- Maintains cost database by entering and backing up data.
- Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing technical publications.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Must possess ability to manage multiple project quotes and estimates.
- Excellent time-management and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings.
- Working knowledge of typical material handling equipment, steel and wood mill production knowledge preferred.
- Effectively communicate with clients and deliver project progress reports as required.
- Develop and adhere to budgets, timelines, and quality control.
- Prepare steel take-offs for fabrication and installation estimates.
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers, clients, and other trades to achieve project goals and timelines.
- Conduct site visits to evaluate the scope of work and gather information for estimates.
- Prepare quantity take-offs and cost breakdowns.
- Perform research to determine material costs and availability.
- Evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers.
Preferred qualifications
- Previous Experience in both Metal & Mill work manufacturing environments is essential.
- Must have a minimum of 3 years or more years working in project management support for manufacturing company.
- Strong Excel required (Pivot tables, VLOOKUPS, SUMIFS and other)
- Must be a team player and willing to jump in and help to meet company deliverables.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks with high degree of organization.
- Must be able to thrive in fast paced environments.
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and meet tight deadlines.
- Must use judgment, be very detail oriented and use judgement.
- Must be comfortable being very hands on to help drive process improvement.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Results Driven.
Education
- High school diploma, 4-year bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification preferred from Project Management Institute.
